Cybersecurity competition is designed to introduce the participants to both the “offensive” (how to discover vulnerabilities and how they are exploited) and “defensive” (how to protect systems and patch vulnerabilities) sides of the security landscape.

During the conference, space will be available for individuals to participate in the competition. While it is not required for participants to participate from this area (they can compete as long as they can connect to the wireless network). The designated area will provide an environment for individuals to discuss their efforts and to obtain guidance from the competition organizers to help them learn more about the environment.

By participating in the competition, faculty members will also learn about tools that they can use in the classroom to illustrate processes to discover system vulnerabilities and secure systems and networks that will benefit the students as security professionals. They will gain valuable experience that can be used in advising/coaching their own competition teams.

Cybersecurity Competition Workshop to be held in Kohala 2 on January 4, 2018 at 9:00 – 12:00 will introduce the participants to cybersecurity competitions. A discussion on competitions in general, their purpose and goals, will be followed by hands-on instruction on how to participate in the Panoply competition that will be conducted during the HICSS conference.
